Bobby Sng entered the University of Malaya (in Singapore) to study medicine in 1956. Student ministry started for him when he joined the Varsity Christian Fellowship (VCF) there. In 1959, he and some other key VCF student leaders played a significant role in discussions leading to the formation of FES the same year.
When he graduated in 1962, together with his wife Ivy, he went to Cameron Highlands, Malaysia from 1963 to 1969 where he became a ‘tentmaker’, practising medicine while assisting in church work there. During that period, he also served as an associate staff worker with FES Malaya, helping out with the growing student work in North Malaya. In 1969, he returned to Singapore and was appointed the first General Secretary of FES.
From 1978 to 1981, Dr Sng held a concurrent position as GCF Graduate Secretary. After stepping down as General Secretary of FES in 1988, he returned to the post of Graduate Secretary until 1992. During that period, he played a key role in the setting up of the FES Graduate Centre (where the FES and GCF offices are currently housed) and St Luke’s Hospital for the Elderly.
Though having officially left FES and GCF in 1988 and 1992 respectively, he continued to be involved in student and graduate ministry as a speaker at various meetings, through his writings, and as a valued advisor to the staff team. He also served as President of FES from 1997 to 2002; and as one of the Vice Presidents from 2002 to 2008.
At the international level, Dr Sng served three terms in the IFES Executive Committee (Board) from 1971 to 1975, then as Vice-Chair from 1979 to 1983, and from 1995 to 1999. Apart from contributing to the global ministry, he was also a regular teacher and Bible expositor at IFES conferences at the international and regional levels.
Dr Sng earned his Diploma in Theology from the Melbourne College of Divinity through self-study. He worshipped at Wilkie Terrace Christian Assembly. Besides his involvement in FES and GCF, Dr Sng also served on the boards of the Bible Society of Singapore, Evangelical Fellowship of Singapore, Overseas Missionary Fellowship (Singapore), Scripture Union (Singapore), and St Luke’s Hospital.
Dr Bobby Sng was called home to be with the Lord on 14 October 2019.
